Learn the ropes first: beginner classes and workshops across the UK

London has weekly beginner rope classes (shibari). Anatomie Studio in Peckham runs a Thursday beginners' evening at £18 with no partner or kit needed, Studio Ma in Mile End teaches a graduated course from zero, and one-off workshops run across the city. Classes also run in Glasgow, Leeds, Nottingham and Essex.

Finding them is the hard part. Beginner classes run every week, but the details sit scattered across individual studio sites and generalist ticketing platforms, and nobody compares price, whether you need a partner, or what to bring. This page makes that comparison. Facts below were checked against the organisers' own published wording on 2 September 2026, except the index entries marked as verified 1 September, and anything an organiser does not state is marked not stated rather than guessed.

Why a class before anything else

A practical class or workshop is a low-pressure first step into rope and kink events. Someone teaches, and the structure of the session is set in advance. A common route after that is a practice session (rope jam), then a beginner-friendly meet-up in a pub (munch), then parties or club nights if you want them. You can stop at any point.

London beginner rope classes (shibari) compared

All cells checked 2 September 2026 against the pages listed under sources. Anatomie Studio and Studio Ma book through Ticket Tailor, whose event pages our checker could not fetch (HTTP 403), so per-event prices on the booking platform itself are unconfirmed.

For a sense of the going rate: The Psychedelic Society's one-off beginners class in May 2025 at Chocolate Studios cost £50 for a single place and £90 for a couple. Verified one-off London classes run £30 to £50 a head, which makes Anatomie's £18 weekly evening the cheapest taught entry point we found.

The London options in detail

Anatomie Studio, Peckham

Anatomie describes itself as "the UK's first full-time shibari educational space". It sits at Arch 113 / Unit 17 Station Passage, London SE15 2JR, near Queens Road Peckham station, which its accessibility page says has a lift and a staff-operated ramp. The same page describes the studio as ground level and wheelchair accessible, with a larger bathroom wide enough for a wheelchair and no strobing lights by default. The lounge mezzanine is reachable only by stairs.

The way in is the weekly Thursday Beginners Jam, £18 per person and cheaper with a membership or pass, which opens with a 90 minute taster class. The studio's own pitch: "Our Thursday beginners' evenings are the perfect starting point. You'll learn foundational rope techniques in a supportive, no-pressure setting where connection and consent come first." Its FAQ is specific about level, saying the beginner lesson runs from 7pm to 8.30pm and assumes zero rope experience. The get-started page states that no experience, partner or kit is required.

Booking is in advance through Ticket Tailor at buytickets.at/anatomiestudiolondon. No minimum age or ID rule is stated on the pages we checked.

Studio Ma, Mile End

Studio Ma, at Adams House, 129 Mile End Road, London E1 4BG, teaches a graduated Foundations ladder: Class 0 Rope & Body Handling, Course 1 Play on the Floor, Course 2 The TK, Course 3 Intro to Partials, Class 4 Predicaments & Spice, and Course 5 Intro to Suspension. Class 0 asks for nothing on arrival: "No experience needed. Just a clear introduction that sets you up for success".

The live event list shows Course 1 (beginners) on Thursday 10 September 2026 with further dates after it, a drop-in class on Wednesday 9 September 2026, and open practice sessions (rope jams) on Mondays. The list page shows no times or prices, so check the booking page before travelling. The most recent introduction we could verify, on Tuesday 6 January 2026 (7pm to 10pm, doors 6:30pm), cost £30 for a single ticket and £55 for a couple. Enquiries go to events@studioma.org.uk.

House of Circe, Stoke Newington

House of Circe's Level 1 Introduction to Shibari covers the historical context and evolution of shibari, consent and negotiation, rope safety, basic knots, and flowing and manipulation with rope, with everything supplied: "we will provide ropes and all the materials you need for the workshop". There is currently nothing to book. The site marks scheduling as Coming soon, and we found no upcoming date anywhere as of 2 September 2026.

The most recent workshop, taught by Lila Tavata on Saturday 30 May 2026 (11am to 4pm, Stoke Newington N16, exact address confirmed closer to the time), had a stated audience: "This workshop is for FLINTA people and allies. (All bodies welcome)". FLINTA covers women and lesbian, intersex, non-binary, trans and agender people. The listing stated that the venue was not wheelchair accessible. Attendees were asked to bring food to share for dinner, and rope was sold on site.

Shibari 101, Seven Sisters Road

Shibari 101: Beginners Introduction to the art of rope bondage, run by The Knaughty Otter, next runs on Saturday 7 November 2026, 2:30pm to 5:30pm, at (EVOKE) Unit A Rowan Apartments, Seven Sisters Road, London N4 1FS. Tickets are £39 plus a £2.83 booking fee on OutSavvy. The event is 18+, ropes are provided, and you can attend individually or with a partner.

What beginners ask

Do you need a partner

It varies by class, and it is the first thing to check on any listing. Anatomie's default for its workshops is that you bring someone: "Unless otherwise stated on the event listing, you will need to come along with someone." Thursdays are the stated exception: the studio says that on a Thursday you can come solo, with a partner or as a small group, and that it is entirely up to you. Studio Ma takes solo bookings and set expectations plainly on its January 2026 listing: "If you come alone, we cannot guarantee that you find a partner in the class. However, observing holds as much value as participating." Shibari 101 admits people individually or with a partner, and The Psychedelic Society's 2025 class welcomed solo attendees.

What do you wear

Nobody we checked has a formal dress code for classes. At Anatomie most people show up in street clothes or change into yoga or dance wear, and the studio notes loose clothing or jeans can get in the way. House of Circe asked for "Comfortable clothing for movement and sitting eg yoga / sport / dance attire". The Knaughty Otter's page says: "People usually wear comfortable clothing like yoga or dance attire. We advise against loose fitting clothing and also jeans can sometimes feel a bit restrictive." The advice on all three pages is the same: wear clothes you can kneel and move in, and avoid loose fitting items and jeans.

Do you need your own rope

Not at beginner level, at any class that states a policy. Anatomie's FAQ: "For beginner classes, you are usually not expected to bring your own rope and it's perfectly fine to use our community ropes." House of Circe provides materials and The Knaughty Otter provides ropes. If you do want your own, House of Circe sold rope on site at its May 2026 workshop at £18 for a 5mm x 8m treated vegan jute rope, or £39 for a beginners package of two ropes plus safety shears. Studio Ma does not state a rope policy on the pages we checked.

Will there be nudity

Not stated. None of the four London organisers above publishes a nudity level on any page we checked, in either direction. If it matters to you, ask the organiser before booking.

Beyond London

The Glasgow, Leeds and Nottingham entries were last verified in the Other Nights index on 1 September 2026.

The only rope teaching in our index is the Glasgow one: Kink Workshop: Rope at The Ecclesia, listed under the club's Kink Events category. The index carries seven other taught series, checked on 2 September 2026, but they teach adjacent skills rather than rope or kink technique: striptease, sensual dance, life drawing and an eight-week dominance mentorship. Booking is in advance only, in the organiser's words: "Due to the requirements of our public liability insurance, and to help us keep our event pricing competitive, places at our standard public events must be booked and paid for in advance using our online booking system." The club admits people of all genders, solo or partnered, at 18 or over with Challenge 25 ID. The club's published rules say first-time attendees get a venue tour ending in the social area and that phones and cameras are kept away during events, and it lists lockers (bring a padlock, around 40mm), a changing area and private rooms for changing. The price is not stated in our index, so check the organiser's page. More from the city is on our Glasgow page.

In Leeds, Quest's midweek kink and fetish night "Includes informal demonstrations, safety guidance and short workshops." Quest is a private members club: joining takes two forms of ID and a short screening, and non-members are admitted on Tuesday, Wednesday daytime and Thursday. Dress is smart casual, with tracksuits, hats and caps not permitted. More is on our Leeds page.

In Nottingham, Purple Mamba runs structured newcomer sessions at the club: "Newbie Couple Workshops, Single Lady Evenings and Single Gent Workshops (registration required for workshops)".

For rope teaching specifically, Shibari Lounge describes itself as a "purpose-built rope and photography studio in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, just 40 minutes from London Fenchurch Street". It offers workshops, intensives and one-to-one teaching in Japanese-style rope (kinbaku). Its workshops page lists themed workshops but publishes no dates or prices yet, and says detail will be added soon. The last introductory workshop we could verify ran on 5 April 2025.

After your first class

Anatomie's Tuesday Jam is £15 and asks for at least a basic grounding in rope, which a few Thursday beginner lessons provide, and Studio Ma runs its open practice sessions (rope jams) on Mondays. For the social side without rope in hand, the next step is usually a beginner-friendly meet-up in a pub (munch).

The Ecclesia's next session is Sunday 13 September 2026, and Anatomie's beginners' evening runs every Thursday.

The price of the Ecclesia workshop is not stated in our index. No organiser above states a nudity level.
